A new time efficient numerical procedure for the prediction of the final shape of the large parts with the aircraft typical 'stringer-to-skin' weldments is developed. The presented method is based on the preliminary estimation of the plastic strain accumulated during the welding process and the subsequent cooling by the 2D nonlinear finite element analysis and mapping it as an initial condition into the 3D linear finite element analysis. The combination of the 2D non-linear FEM analysis and 3D linear FEM analysis instead of the time-consuming 3D non-linear one allows reducing the required calculation time in 3 orders of magnitude. It opens the way for the relatively quick prediction of the welding distortion for the large uniform weldments. The experimental validation of the predictions obtained by means of the proposed numerical procedure is the subject of our current intensive investigations.
