For the production of high-strength parts made of steel metal forming is a wide-spread production technique. Due to the high output of the production lines and the superior metal properties many automotive components are forged. In recent years precision forging of gears has been a topic of research. Given their high dynamic and tribologic loads gears need a hard surface layer to increase the wear resistance. Simultaneously the bulk material needs to stay ductile to prevent fracture of the teeth. In order to adjust the material properties of forged gears accordingly the so-called compound-forging was invented. For this process slugs made out of non-tempering steels, e.g. case-hardening steels, are put together with tube-sections made out of tempering steels. During the forming process both materials are forge-welded together. In this paper a die-concept for the investigation of the applicability of compound-forging to indirect impact extrusion is presented. The aim of this process is to adapt the technology to not only forge gear wheels but also forge shaft-like parts with a hard surface layer and a ductile bulk material. Therefore, the compounding of two non-tempering steels and two tempering steels by indirect impact extrusion is investigated. The results of these investigations are presented in this paper.
