Computer Aided Approval (CAA) is issued by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) as a synonym for the review and approval of constructions on the basis of digital documents and data model files. This term is analogous to the acronyms CAD/CAE and CAM. It does not emphasise automatic processing, but it rather implies the support of human approval action by digital means. If CAA is ever to become more than the reviewing of digital documents, namely the beginning of an improvement of the information density in reviewing documentation through the use of data model files, then the process of approving ship specific documentation is going to change substantially. GL is implementing a special branch of the CAA-process together with AVEVA. Improved quality of decision-making in the approval process, efficient acquisition and distribution of information, the ability to cope with the growing amount of data and a better information management are expected benefits. The improvements are listed as follows: (1) The communication between customer and GL becomes faster - approval will be faster, (2) with access to rich data model files the plan approval engineer gives better support to the design engineer, and (3) GL supports advanced approval procedures, such as direct calculation and risk assessment. GL currently prepares the infrastructure to let this vision become reality. Hardware and software solutions are adjusted to new working conditions of a future plan approval engineer.
