The assurance of product data quality is an important issue in the ship design process as errors result in major technical and economical consequences. This paper presents the research and development project QualiSHIP in which knowledge based software tools are developed to be used for automated quality checking of ship product data. The data are to be checked at any point of time in the design process as well as at data exchange procedures between shipyard, classification society and design agent. The conformity with predefined rules, expressing quality criteria has to be ensured. The system architecture described allows to check the data in a neutral form. Due to this approach, the knowledge based tools can handle data from different 3D models and also enables cross-checks in case of multiple data representations due to original and derived data formats. Quality criteria are classified, the fundamental implementation method in form of a rule based system is described. The proof of shape equivalence is discussed as this is an important criteria of product data quality in the structure detailed design and downstream process phases.
