For the first time since years, a completely new set of legal requirements concerning pedestrian protection has been enforced and needs to be considered in vehicle design from the very first beginning. In this paper the existing requirements on pedestrian protection are outlined: 1. The industry commitment on pedestrian protection in Europe; 2. EU Directive 2003/102/EC; 3. the Japanese legislation on pedestrian protection; 4. Legislation in other countries; 5. consumer requirements on pedestrian protection. Future Global Technical Regulation (GTR) on pedestrian protection is discussed. The draft GTR also covers the test procedures already known from the research in EEVC or IHRA respectively: an impact of an adult headform to the rear part of the bonnet surface; an impact of a child headform to the front part of the bonnet surface; an impact of a (lower) legform to the bumper structure; alternatively an impact of the upper legform against the bumper structure for vehicles with a high bumper. In Japan a new legform is currently in development. The legform is called Flexible Pedestrian Legform Impactor (FlexPLI) and is intended to better reflect the behaviour of a human leg during an accident. Industry clearly supports the activities to make roads safer also for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists.
