The materials used in the automobile must fulfil a complex profile of different requirements. It is therefore essential to choose an appropriate material for each component in the vehicle, selected and assessed in terms of availability, the production process, functionality during actual use of the vehicle until recycling also in the light of legal requirements, and cost considerations. The purpose of this paper is to cast a clearer light on the requirements made of car body materials, joining forces with all process partners in order to recognise challenges in good time and expedite the development of new materials. Therefore an overview of requirements in the development process is outlined and examples are described discussing the specific demands according specific materials. The following requirements in body development are discussed: Calculability of material behaviour, experiences with materials, clear nomenclature of materials. Requirements of materials in the production process concern forming and shaping, joining and the surface. Requirements concerning lightweight construction are: strength and stiffness. Other issues to consider are aspects relevant for safety, service and legislation.
