It is now a commonly accepted practice to use 3D numerical methods in the development of vehicles. The cooling airflow is investigated with CFD and sensitive component temperatures are simulated with a thermal analysis software that include radiation. However today's underhood thermal management computations usually only simulate steady-state load cases. This paper describes different aspects of thermal soak and proposes a numerical approach for the computation of air and component temperatures during thermal soak. The buoyancy driven flow, which results from the natural convection in the engine compartment, is investigated in a generic load case named 'idle without fan'. The generic load case is steady-state as opposed to the transient thermal soak. The computation of air temperatures is performed using a closed loop thermal analysis within the whole underhood. Thermal soak measurements are conducted within the IVK/FKFS University of Stuttgart climatic wind tunnel. As a sub-model a rubber disc at the cardan shaft within the tunnel region is investigated. The transient thermal analysis is conducted using RadTherm. The flow is investigated in StarCD within the complete vehicle model. The transient air temperature behaviour is simplified using the results of the preceding investigations and linear interpolation. The analysis of heat fluxes clearly show that the main temperature rise results from the change from rotating state to non-rotating state. In the near future, a fully iterative coupling of the whole engine compartment should be available. With today's Navier-Stokes CFD solvers it seems nearly impossible to resolve the transient behaviour of the flow. In a first step, it is therefore hoped that the quasi-stationary computation of the flow is sufficient. Nevertheless, the described methodology itself will be the same for a coupled transient thermal and transient flow computations.
