By assignment of the FAT (German Association for Research on Automobile-Technique) a test vehicle was equipped with innovative and highly precise measuring technology, so that it could be used autonomously in wind tunnels and on the road. More than 250 hours were invested in the full-scale aeroacoustic automotive wind tunnel of IVK in Stuttgart and in three other wind tunnels in Germany to compare more than 100 vehicle configurations driven on proving grounds. The full-scale aeroacoustic automotive wind tunnel in the Institute for Internal Combustion Engines and Automotive Engineering (IVK), which is operated by FKFS, is suited for simulation of flow phenomena such as flow properties, weather circumstances, on-road conditions and other unpredictable factors. It has a nozzle surface of 22.45 m2 and a modern 5-belt moving ground system, which consists of four wheel rotation units mounted on the wind tunnel balance and a center belt between the wheels. This technology also offers the possibility of conditioning the boundary layer profile with distributed suctions and tangential blowing in front, beside, under and behind the vehicle. Compared to conventional ground simulation without moving ground or boundary layer conditioning (KBS), the 'FKFS on-road simulation in FWK' (SFS) provides proper simulation of on-road conditions. The relative estimation of the different components of the FKFS on-road simulation in FWK shows that the decisive importance comes up to the center belt (CB) for the approach of the on-road pressure distribution in the under body. Against this, in the wheel housings and in the flow areas around the frontal and rear wheels, the simulation suitability is determined especially by the wheel rotation. As a result, it can be concluded that for industrial wind tunnel measurements and standard series vehicles, a sufficient ground simulation system can be a little less complex than the FKFS on-road simulation in FWK (SFS), or even than the other FKFS wind tunnel techniques mentioned above
