In this paper a design improvement project is presented in which the use of computer models was a key success factor. The durability of the bearing arrangement of a cooling fan for a truck engine has been considered. A multi-discipline approach was taken. With the use of the SKF simulation program Orpheus, models were created. Experimental modal analyses were performed to validate the models, and vibration measurements were recorded and used as boundary conditions in the simulations. In the first phase of the project the numerical model was created and validated. The most important failure mechanism was identified. In the second phase the models were used to improve the design by considering different bearing arrangements. Due to the complex dynamic character of the problem the computer models were essential to execute this design process in a time-efficient manner.
