With hydrostatically driven vehicles like crop sprayers going faster and travelling on public roads the issue of braking and safety becomes more and more crucial. Hydrostatic wheel drives using variable displacement, zero-destrokeable Rexroth A6 hydraulic motors in conjunction with an electronic control unit offer unique possibilities for designing advanced brake functions. The newly developed algorithm for hydrostatic braking consists of a high performance brake routine and an anti-lock function with brake torque distribution. All functions have been put into practice without using additional hardware components. Thus electronic brake management constitutes a cost-effective way to add functional value to hydrostatic transmission systems.
