Since the 1970s death toll and severe injuries caused by traffic accidents have declined. In addition to the many passive safety measures, advanced assistance systems for active safety are being developed to further reduce accidents. Starting from accident analysis and driver behaviour study this article describes approaches to push developments for enhanced safety, participating in several of the most relevant national and international research projects. Using driving simulation and innovative technologies, systems were designed to assist the driver as much as possible with as little paternalism as needed. Potentially, these first systems are expected to act on more than two-thirds of all intersection-related accidents.
