Within the European research project with the acronym VIBSEAT measurement of human body response sitting in upright position in a cushioned seat was undertaken in a rather wide frequency band 0.5 Hz to 30.0 Hz using the BAuA hexapod vibration simulator under stationary random reality-like excitation. Detailed analysis revealed an unexpected resonance peak at approximately 15 - 17 Hz (depending on excitation intensity), which was not present when the test subject sat on a rigid support. It was hypothesised that this was due to a hitherto not known resonance in the seat structure. A respective multi-body oscillatory system was set-up and its parameters identified. Further on prediction of vibration reduction in the fore-and-aft (x-direction) by increased seat structure damping was undertaken. Indicated possible improvement in seat vibration mitigation properties in the x-direction could help the seat manufacturer to assess the pros and cons of possible improvement of seat upper part structure and further detailed experimental investigations.
