The automotive industry is confronted with increasing environmental issues associated with the ever-increasing worldwide fleet of vehicles. These issues include the fuel consumption and emissions of the vehicle in use, as well as the consumption of non-renewable material and the generation of waste during production and the disposal at the end of life. In response to these problems, there has been an increase in new legislation and customer requirements. These requirements underline the need for environmental friendly innovation. The companies that can innovate, for instance, by offering solutions for recycling or end-of-life alternatives, can capitalise on a great business opportunity. Worldwide progress in sustainable mobility and in environmental performance of automobiles is counting many successful stories: this paper presents some environmental-friendly products and technologies for automotive application. Management systems such as ISO 14001 (environmental management standard of the International Organization for Standardization) have become 'state of the art', assuring continuous reduction in the environmental impact of manufacturing. This type of awareness and continuous improvement has to move upstream to product design and development. This will require the development of adequate methods and applicable tools. Especially, this will require the encouragement of innovative vision on environmental market trends and design approaches.
