Spinel lithium manganese powders were successfully prepared by spray pyrolysis using metal nitrate solution. As-prepared particles had a porous microstructure and were nonagglomerated, which had an average diameter of about 2 micron with narrow size distribution. Chemical analysis showed that the molar ratio of Li/Mn was kept to starting solution concentration. XRD revealed that the crystal form was spinel type of lithium manganese with space group of Fd3m. The charge/discharge capacity of lithium manganese was 110 mAh/g at the rate of 1C. The charge/discharge capacity and cycle performance of lithium manganese obtained from aerosol process was superior to that of commercial powders by solid state reaction. Lithium ion battery module for tram was also developed and its performance was examined. The energy and power density of lithium ion cell was 110 Wh/kg and 1920 W/kg, respectively. The performance of tram which 20 kWh type lithium ion battery module was set up was examined. The tram was run for 20 km at one charge.
