A manganese type lithium ion battery was developed for HEV (hybrid EV) use by improving the cycle life. The manganese material has been said to have a short cycle life under conventional technology in spite of its good thermal stability and large natural abundance. The Mn type Li ion cell for HEV was developed by adding high power density modification to a pure-EV cell of high energy density specification. The HEV cell of high power consists of Li-rich manganese spinel for positive electrode and hard carbon for negative electrode. The 48-cell module for HEV has the output power density of 1350 W/kg at DOD 50 %. The batteries are already used in commercial vehicles and are proving to have excellent performance. The rated power for Nissan Tino Hybrid of 12.5 kW output and 8 kW input for a module can be supplied between the SOC of 20 % and 90 %.
