The Audi A5 marks a further milestone in the sporting character of the Audi Marque. Based on the whole vehicle targets for the A5 the development process in the concept phase is shown. In the case of the A5 it was required to mate the high goals for pedestrian protection and vehicle crash with sporting dynamics and vehicle styling. The development of the A5 chassis concept shows how these seemingly conflicting requirements were brought together by making use of very different concepts. Fundamental decisions were made early in the project based on the results of vehicle, assembly and component simulations. Examples of these simulation methods are presented in the paper. The result was a completely new chassis. This includes a new front and rear suspension, new steering rack and column, fuel tank, exhaust system and also a new driveline mounting system. The resulting vehicle dynamic behaviour impressively shows the benefits for the customer and the positioning of Audi as a manufacturer of sporting vehicles for the premium sector.
