Aluminium cast alloys can suffer from corrosion fatigue in engine coolant. The experiments performed showed that the fatigue strength in a corrosive environment is reduced by about 30 MPa at 5 million load cycles. This corresponds to the fatigue strengths evaluated for specimens with as-cast surface. The three alloys tested showed only slightly differing behaviour. Also, under corrosive conditions the influence of the surface structure is less pronounced than found by testing in air. Metallografic investigations showed the strong influence of the corrosive attack during the fatigue process. Electrochemical current noise measurements reveal the continuous influence of corrosion during the test and might be a promising tool to monitor corrosion fatigue under the conditions tested.
