This paper is concerned with the influence of the environment on the fatigue behavior of welded aluminum structures and describes methods that have been evolved to improve this behaviour. Successful approaches include the application of particular organic coatings and the use of brush peening and combination of the two methods which proved to be cumulatively beneficial.
