Existing methods allowing identification of ethanol-based fuel-blends for automotive applications can be divided in 2 classes. The first class comprises the methods that allow fuel blend identification through analysis of the combustion process and its consequences. The second class comprises methods focusing on the analysis of certain physical properties of the fuel blend itself. The combustion-control based methods clearly have been more successful in the past, not the least because of the lower cost, since they do not require an additional electrochemical fuel-blend sensor. The article first describes the state-of-the-art of sensorless flexible fuel identification systems, and discusses the associated advantages and limitations. Then, the potential of these methods to satisfy engines performance criteria is evaluated, while simultaneously guaranteeing user-friendliness and customer acceptance. Other influencing factors, such as cold start ability, fuel quality (pureness) and fuel tank geometry are also discussed. It is concluded, with regards to these multiple factors, that it is not straightforward to carryover existing sensorless fuel-blend identification techniques to future high-performance systems, especially not for the EU/US market. More precisely, it is shown that a sensorless flexible fuel identification system can only be employed when the maximum ethanolpercentage of the fuel blend is limited. To overcome these limitations, Siemens VDO has developed a new low-cost flex fuel sensor, based on the measurement of the blend's electrochemical properties.
