Most OEMs currently evaluate the most effective way to specify Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), especially for in-vehicle infotainment systems. Traditionally, HMI was specified with simulations and paper documentation. The paper documentation included flowcharts, display screen layouts, icons, bitmaps and text tables. This HMI documentation was then passed on to suppliers to interpret into software code and to implement into the target platform. Comprehensive test and validation from supplier and OEM was required to comply with the high quality standards for automotive software. General Motors has developed a new approach called database driven HMI to define and implement HMI software. The approach is based on 3 architectural elements called: HMI database, containing the entire HMI HMI engine, interpreting the HMI database like an internet browser Functional unit, the interface between HMI engine and application software The new HMI database is entirely isolated from the application software. In addition to that, the HMI database is easily accessible and completely decoupled from the HMI engine. Therefore, it offers several advantages: The OEM HMI engineer will take complete ownership for the HMI database. The supplier's involvement into specifications and into software code generation decreases significantly. Changes on HMI concepts can be done and verified at any stage of development with minimal HMI verification effort. This adaptable and flexible HMI database allows to handle variant management for brand specific or regional specific requirements with much less effort.
