The general trend in the automobile industry is heading further towards product individualisation. Never before has there been such a wide range of different models, variants and equipment versions within already established and new vehicle categories. And the number is increasing further. With introduction of the new methodology for 100% representation of onboard supply system wiring harnesses in DMU (Digital Mock UP), important prerequisites have been created in electrical and electronic development at Volkswagen in order to face the great challenges from further advancing product individualisation. As an essential component of virtual product development, DMU has become a successful standard within electrical and electronic development in an improved quality. The success can be seen in current vehicle projects where such small installation dimension related changes have arisen like never before on comparable projects. There are already projects where no single installation dimension related and cost effective change has so far been a major cost factor. However, there are still some potential elements in the area around development that cannot be opened up using DMU alone. Included in these, among others, are the consideration of material properties and thereby, for example, the behaviour of flexible components with regards to installations, the addition of complete simulation building blocks as prerequisite for a virtual prototype, the area encompassing (re)use of work results. The foundation for this is formed by more tightly meshed processes with the specialist departments participating in the product process, more easily usable tools (e.g. based on virtual reality technologies) and complete product data management.
