An increasing awareness has developed to tackle the problem of thin plate distortion at source. Traditionally thin plate distortion or buckling had been seen as being a result of the welding process. Although it is a significant contributor, it most certainly is not the sole cause of it. Distortions can originate from an number of sub-contributors (steel rolling mill; cutting process; transportation, handling and storage; straightening). In the present article a specific need to manage the processes leading to thin plate distortion is emphasized. Only the processes for the production of stiffened steel panels and sub-assemblies for shipbuilding have been considered. In the absence of a system which totally measures distortion, the management of it has to centre on implementing processes which are known to reduce, or have a high potential to reduce thin plate distortion. It is for this reason that techniques such as FEM and ANN are of significant benefit as they can be used as strong indicators for specific actions which can be shown to be beneficial.
