This paper presented an approach for the evaluation of road-tire coefficient of friction and stopping capability of passenger cars. The procedure, implemented in a computer programm, consists of the evaluation of the braking performance of a given vehicle, through the following steps: Evaluation of a vehicle's deceleration capability in reference conditions, obtained from on-site measurements or using deceleration data published by specialized reviews. Scaling of the resulting decelerations by means of a fuzzy logic system; the rules and the membership functions that form the knowledge base of the fuzzy system were derived by analysing the influence of significant parameters (road surface, speed, weather and tire conditions) on the coefficient of friction, as reported by technical press. Besides integration with a two-axis accelerometer is offered: If an on-site road test is possible, the software allows to process the accelerometer's data and, if necessary, to scale the results to different cars and/or different conditions. If a test is not possible, an output is produced using only the fuzzy module and stopping distance's data. Validation and comparison with experimental data produced at DMTI ans DSD was carried out, and showed that good results can be reached with or without the use of deceleration road tests.
