In this paper an optimization-based approach is presented for allocating tolerances and materials of automotive stampings which involve reduced overall manufacturing costs. First, the impact and interrelations of stamping tolerance and material specifications are discussed concerning the product (car body) and the process (stamping process). Benefits of a parallel optimization of tolerances and materials are revealed. As a preliminary result of an ongoing project a cost-tolerance model based upon shape- and material-related formability is proposed for the stamping domain. The optimization problem is then formulated for the optimization of tolerances and an outline is given for the extension of the optimization to include stamping materials.
