The correlation between intake valve lift characteristics and air quantity entering the engine was analyzed to clarify the factors determining the intake air mass. This analysis was conducted using a variable valve actuation system capable of varying valve lift characteristics arbitrarily. A method was then devised for estimating the intake air mass from the lift characteristics without using complex physical equations and was validated in engine tests. This method facilitates calculation of the lift characteristics for obtaining the target intake air mass, making it possible to utilize fully the potential of a variable valve actuation system for engine torque control.
