Urban buses reduce individual transport, participate to reinforce attractiveness of public transport, and illustrate city's image. Between all pathways available (NGV, LPG, Diesel with particulates filter, biofuel) with their advantages, not easily valorised (pollutants, green houses gas, noise), their inconveniences (costs, practise & expertise changes), choices are more and more difficult for decision makers. Instead of leading national individual evaluation of these pathways, the project aims at overcoming these barriers for promoting alternative fuels, and best adapted technology or fuel for a given bus network. Five national agencies for Environment & Energy management with bus network associated, an expert laboratory on engine measurements, a technical service for communication from Ministry of Public works, Transportation and Housing, one of the biggest European bus networks, will design, create, test and disseminate a new decision tool, completed by methodologies, examples, and web site. Based on bibliography, existing studies and information from bus networks involved in the project, methodologies, criteria for pathways comparison and on-board pollutants measurements are developed and specified. Emissions databases will be created from well to wheel (for integrating pollutants from fuel production: well to tank and tank to wheel), from Euro 1 to Euro 4, for majors pathways in use in Europe: Diesel with DPF, biofuel, NGV, LPG. Theses pollutants (CO, HC, NOx and Particulates) and green houses gas (GHG) emissions will be measured on more than 10 different pathways, for all engines speeds and loads' points, during the project. For the tested bus network, simple measures will be realized for determining speeds and loads map in real conditions. Then, all pollutants emissions will be estimate without any expensive measurements, crossing databases and map measured. Theses pollutants and GHG will be completed by other parameters important for comparison, such as noise or unregulated pollutants. Specific simulation tool will be developed for estimate some of theses parameters (noise for example), to avoid expensive measures in real conditions.
