To explore how the driver evaluates vehicle motion with regard to driving pleasure, we measured three-dimensional head motion under actual driving conditions. A contact type of mechanical linkage between the driver's head and the vehicle body was used for measurement to keep accuracy of every six degrees of freedom of head motion. The driver's head motion was affected by the vehicle motion, especially under the transient maneuver condition compared with steady state. The driver head oscillation test indicated that there is a resonance frequency between steering angle input and the driver's head motion around vehicle yaw and roll resonanz frequency. Therefore, one explanation for the driver's perception of vehicle motion may be that the head motion is affected by the vehicle body motion. The driver's steering action also causes head motion to be in the lateral direction and its direction was not the same as in the steady state. When compared with steady state, we understood that the driver head reacts to both vehicle motion and steering motion. The drives perception may help to obtain more information on the transient condition and this may derive the driver's impression on the drive feel. The tendency on the driver's head motion may differ according to the driver's skill and individually, although simultaneous observation of the driver and vehicle motion may help explain the driver's perception of quantitative values for explaining sensory evaluations. The driver's perception is not accounted for head motion, but the driver's body. We assure that the analysis of the human head and body motion, not only the driver but also the passengers, under actual driving conditions is needed to improve the drive feel.
