Online wagon speed restriction setting can improve train running safety. The train operation speed depends on many factors such as the dynamic performance of vehicles, derailment and environmental limitations. The derailment potential, which is mainly determined by wheel-rail interface forces, plays a key role in the evaluation of wagon running safety. This article presents a method to set wagon speed restrictions based on wagon body accelerations. An inverse wagon dynamic model was developed to estimate wheel load. Integration-partial modal matrix (IPMM) method was provided to treat the wagon system input identification and wheel load problem. The model is nonlinear and it can be easily extended to the case of profiles of wheel and rail being used. The accelerations and velocity can be used as inputs to inverse wagon model in order to estimate the wheel-rail contakt forces and the derailment index, which can provide information about the speed restriction required. To set the wagon speed restriction based on wagon responses presents an interesting academic problem and has industrial applications. The approach described in this article is an initial work in this field. As we know, measuring wheel-rail contact forces, even indirectly, is expensive, so indirect methods should be selected. Forward models need track irregularity information as input and are computationally expensive for online systems. Whereas the inverse model giving estimations from known wagon body accelerations should provide a possible solution more economically and efficiently. This method is easier to adapt for an on-board prediction system. The results from the inverse wagon model are not sufficiently accurate for some cases, when compared with VAMPIRE, to offer an alternative approach to wheel-rail contact force analysis. Such accuracy may not be required for some on-board prediction systems where 'threshold limits' are the primary concern of railway operators. Further work is intended to improve the model performance to see what levels of accuracy can be obtained within the constraints of an on-board system. The next step will involve laboratory measurement and field trial tests. Future works are also needed to explore other inverse modelling methods, e.g. combination of integration and ISF technique, for the wheel-rail interface forces estimation.
