In this work, we have tried to determine the root cause of surface tack sometimes found in scratch and mar formulations containing erucamide. The results have clear implications for part manufacturers using erucamide to provide scratch resistance. However, it is important to emphasize that other components in the formulation might also affect the propensity of the scratch and mar system to become tacky. For example, higher concentrations of fillers may retard the rate of erucamide diffusion slowing the onset of the effect, and possibly reducing it. The surfaceto-volume ratio of the plastic part will affect the concentration of slip agent at the surface. Elastomer content and the overall polymer blend composition could also have an effect by increasing or decreasing the surface tack effect depending an changes in erucamide solubility, diffusion rates and polymer morphology. Our study has also shown that advanced scratch and mar products may provide a solution to the problem.
