The paper describes the experimental investigation of a roller bearing equipped with a non-centralized squeeze film damper (SFD). This bearing arrangement was designed originally to support one of the main rotors in the Rolls-Royce aero engine BR710. For the presented investigation, a test rig with a simplified rotor at the University of Leeds was used. It showed the vibration behaviour of the rotor depends on several parameters including speed, unbalance level, oil supply pressure and oil inlet geometry. The comparison to the linear analysis shows a good agreement with the vibration amplitudes of the rotor for small unbalances and high oil inlet pressures. For high unbalances and/or insufficient oil supply pressure an expected worse vibration condition occurs. The tests give quantitative results concerning the limits of the parameters used with respect to this kind of rotor bearing arrangement, but some overall design and operating rules can be derived from these tests. In general a linear damper characteristic would always be desirable. The linearity is normally valid in the case of small unbalances assuming an oil filled damping gap. With the increase of the unbalance level the requirement concerning tolerances with respect to radial clearance and axial sealing becomes more and more important. Also oil supply pressure and oil inlet bore diameter should be of sufficient size to fulfil the requirements mentioned above. Especially in the case of an unknown level of unbalance, effort is required to design a predictable damper to lower the risk of higher vibration amplitudes than expected. Although a good damper might be expensive the robustness should be increased to avoid much more expensive 'trial and error' solutions to problems during engine tests and to cover extreme dynamic situations better.
