Small coupon size samples are frequently used to measure different fire properties of materials. Though this does provide some information about the performance of the material, the data from these tests alone are frequently not sufficient to determine how a material will behave in large-scale tests or end-use applications. A series of examples are presented where small-scale data were used as input into models to determine the performance of materials in large-scale situations. Model input data on fire properties were developed using data from the ASTM E1354 cone calorimeter while thermal properties were measured using a thermal decomposition test apparatus. The apparatus was a 0.46 m cubic enclosure provided with a cylindrical ceramic heater (operating temperature 1150 deg C), capable of producing heat fluxes up to 140 kW/m2. A shutter separated the heater from the test samples located on a platform connected to a load cell for sample mass monitoring. With this apparatus, samples could be as large as 0.20 m square. Models were validated against test data and then used to evaluate material performance in different scenarios, e.g., the insulation thickness required to prevent the exposed facesheet of a sandwich composite from exceeding various temperature thresholds. Applications include fire growth in compartments with combustible linings, fully-developed fires in railcars, and heat transmission through composites during furnace tests.
