The rapid filling of a compressed hydrogen (H2) gas cylinder results in a temperature rise within the cylinder due to heat of compression effects. Without compensation, this effect results in reduced density and lessened vehicle range. In recognition, hydrogen gas storage container standards allow containers to be pressurized such that, when the stored gas temperature stabilizes, a complete fill is achieved based on prevailing ambient conditions. Fast fill hydrogen dispensers need to control the fill process so that safety is ensured and complete fills are achieved over a wide variety of ambient and vehicle conditions. Under a cost-shared program with the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE), Gas Technology Institute (GTI) is developing a H2 fast-fill fueling methodology and associated dispenser and control system for accurately filling hydrogen cylinders. This paper describes the development and testing of a H2 fast-fill fueling dispenser control algorithm.
