In this paper, three types of sustainable drive system - electric drive system, hybrid drive system, and hydrogen ICE drive are proposed to provide viable solutions to the Superbus drive-train system. Feasibility of these sustainable drive systems with corresponding energy storage units, such as Li-Ion battery, Li-S battery, fuel cell, bio-fuels (hydrogen, LPG, natural gas etc), are analyzed and compared in detail in terms of weight, size, efficiency etc. The investigation reveals the impact from the weight of drive-train system on power/energy capacity, size and acceleration capability of Superbus. The hybrid drive-train will not significantly improve the energy efficiency of Superbus. The breakthrough of drive-train system lies in the development of high energy-density rechargeable battery, high power-density high-efficient fuel cell and power converters, advancement of hydrogen generation and storage, and advanced integration technology of power electronics and mechatronics. All these sustainable drive system are viable solutions to Superbus drive train.
