This paper reviews the development of fabric-coating technologies used for roll-over inflatable curtain (IC) airbags. It compares silicone (Si), polyurethane (PU) and silicone-polyurethane (SiPU) coating technologies across a variety of factors and discusses their resistance to aging, temperature, humidity and flammability. The inflatable curtain airbag industry faces increased performance and application challenges in regard to adhesion, sealing, coat weight, flammability and performance degradation over time. Airbag fabric coatings must be evaluated across a range of performance factors and under heat and aging conditions to ensure optimal performance. Extensive evaluation of the coated fabric properties of Si, PU and SiPU coatings indicates that Si coatings offer superior performance over PU and SiPU coatings in the critical areas of thermal resistivity, tear strength and adhesion. Dow Corning can help manufacturers deliver airbag products that meet regulatory and consumer needs with innovative solutions for new silicone coating technologies as well as the implementation and evaluation methods for those technologies.
