This paper presented results of a study investigating the attainable potential of occupant protection with a pre-crash triggered restraint system. The activation of the frontal airbag before a collision occurs makes it possible to realise an airbag with bigger cushion volume in comparison to a standard airbag. Thereby the coupling of the occupant onto the airbag can be improved and the occupant participates earlier on the vehicle deceleration. As on example in- and out-of-position results of a pre-crash passenger airbag were presented. In the numerical simulation the occupant loads for the considered in-position load case (US-NCAP) could be reduced by approximately 20% on average. These good results were also confirmed according to tendency in a sled test. A further improvement of the protection potential could be achieved by the use of an adaptable pre-crash airbag, which was not considered here. The increased deployment time and the in this way reduced aggressiveness of the airbag play an important role in the fulfilment of the out-of-position requirements. By means of experimental results with different deployment times of the airbag it was shown that with the bigger volume pre-crash airbag out-of-position requirements can also be fulfilled. To reach the advantages of the considered pre-crash system, the availability of a remote sensing system which is able to detect an unavoidable accident in time and with the necessary detection reliability is a precondition. At the moment different combinations of environmental sensors are under investigation for that. A first generation of a pre-crash remote sensing system will probably not be able to recognise all possible real-world accident scenarios. Therefore an in-crash activation must still be foreseen for a certain period of time as a fail-safe mode.
