A broad range of different soot regeneration conditions has been investigated, using laboratory scale advanced cordierite catalyzed filters, loaded with synthetic soot and real soot collected from a direct injection diesel engine. Cordierite filter performances, under high soot loading conditions, have been evaluated, as well as the concurrent effect of oxygen concentration and of heat dissipation during regeneration events. It has been assessed that the oxygen feed rate plays a major role in defining the proper soot burning reaction conditions, thus managing critical thermal peaks. Nevertheless, especially at high flow rates, the heat removal due to the gas flow significantly decreases the differences between the soot burning rates at different oxygen contents and thus the risk of having uncontrolled exothermal reactions. The regeneration behaviour of this new filter has been evaluated from standard soot mass loading up to critical 20 g/l soot loading onto single segments. A preliminary thermal safety threshold in terms of maximum soot mass loading, in controlled regeneration conditions (10% oxygen content, safe heating ramp), has been identified for artificial soot: 15 g/l. Then, the synergic effect of soot content and oxygen concentration has been investigated, at 14.5 g/l of synthetic soot, confirming the great potential of this 'safety' control strategy during active filter regeneration. Moreover, using real engine soot onto single DPF segments, the soot regeneration behaviour has been evaluated from 50 kg/h to 200 kg/h equivalent over a wide, representative range of oxygen contents. An innovative geometric structure called asymmetric cell technology (ACT) has been developed and tested in conditions similar to the ones shown in the paper. Such a structure, having an increasing filtering area in the volume unit, allows a more reduced pressure drop compared with standard geometric structure at the same soot loading conditions and a storage for a higher ashes content.
