Apart from the internal combustion engine and the axle system, the driveline of a road vehicle is chiefly defined by the transmission. In today's city buses the powershift automatic transmission predominates. The requirements to be met by transmissions are undergoing major changes. As the torque levels and the coolant temperatures of reengineered combustion engines are steadily increasing while emission and fuelsaving requirements are becoming more stringent, transmission developers are confronted with new challenges. Economy, comfort, and safety requirements have always been standard issues. The requirements of end customers, i.e. vehicle operators, are mostly but not completely identical with the requirements of vehicle manufacturers. Thus, very often, the requirements differ tremendously from region to region, with regard to emissions, for example. This presentation first provides an overall view of the requirements and weightings of vehicle manufacturers and vehicle owners. To what extent are the requirements met by current and future transmissions? The tools and methods used to define the concept are briefly described. The latest version, chosen technologies included, as well as the product features are presented in detail and compared with the requirements. A glimpse is directed at the modern development tools used and their contribution to quality improvement and process acceleration. By the way of conclusion, the advantages achieved are compared with the requirements of the OEM and those of the end user.
