The load-carrying capacity factor of Russian freight cars is now 2.4 to 3.1 compared with 5.6 to 6.1 for USA railways (mileage betwen repairs 100000 km to 120000 km compared with 500000 km to 800000 km, respectively). To increase the load-carrying capacity, new 12G2F and 12G2FD steels (strength class 390) were developed and used in the Russian freight car body construction. The steels were made by addition of of carbide-forming vanadium (0.02% to 0.1%) to the common 09G2D and 09G2S steels. The new steels show an improved fatigue strength limit (by more than 40%), an increased tensile impact strength and an 1.5 to 2 times prolongated life time under cyclic load. The tensile impact strength of welded joints at -60 deg C is also increased. Additionally, three new 14GSFAJD, 12ChG2SMFD and 08Ch3G2FD steels (strength class 450 to 600) were produced by addition of nickel (0.15% to 0.25%), chromium and molybdenum (0.20% to 0.50% and 0.15% to 0.25%, respectively) as well as chromium (2.1% to 2.6%) to the 14GCFD steel (strength class 400). The new steels show an increased yield point (from 400 MPa to 600 MPa) and fatigue resistance (except for the steel modified by chromium addition). Two new 12CHG2SMFAJD and 08G2MFBD steels were produced by addition of molybdenum or niobium to increase their yield point up to 500 MPa. Three other nickel, copper and phosphorus-modified 10ChNDPF, 12ChDPF and 14DPF steels show an increased corrosion resistance at the relatively high yield point (420 MPa). Economic effects of the use of the new steels for freight car body constructions under Russian conditions were shown.
