Hybrid approach combines the desirable features of analytical (regular perturbation) and numerical (collocation) methods for solving optimal control problems. An improved zero order solution for the ascent trajectory, in vacuum, is developed for an ALV (Advanced Launch Vehicle), by taking advantage of the hybrid technique. The approach identifies an intelligent interpolating function. The costate dynamics is improved substantially, as it is derived from the analytically tractable portion of the necessary conditions. The computation is much simplified as the number of segments is reduced for a specified level of accuracy. The potential of hybrid approach for on-board use in launch vehicle for ascent guidance is demonstrated.
