The development and optimisation of the combustion process in hydrogen-fired internal combustion engines (ICE's) can lead to future high-power, high-efficiency and low-emission (CO2, NOx) car engines. Experimental results generated in an injection rig together with highly resolved CFD validation calculations are presented. The goal of the rig is to provide high quality validation test data to check the prediction capability of CFD codes in this particular situation and to investigate empirically the injection behaviour of different injectors. For various injection concepts simple correlations between the mixture formation and the injection parameters could be derived. It will be shown in which regime low temperature real gas modelling is required and which errors are introduced by the assumption of ideal gas in this case. In addition, an overview over turbulent combustion models suited for the simulation of hydrogen combustion in an ICE-typical environment will be given and the result of validation calculations will be shown using models available the commercial CCFD (Combustion Computational Fluid Dynamic) codes.
