The adoption of the CANOPEN fault tolerant standard by the Subsea Instrumentation Interface Standardisation (SMS) Joint Industry Project was agreed by the SMS panel in November 2005. This paper presents the aims and background to the SIIS working groups decision to adopt CAN (Controller Area Network) as an interface standard. For those with limited knowledge of subsea controls technology used in the offshore oil industry, the paper also provides an overview of the history and challenges of the application. The paper will then go on to discuss in more detail how CAN is being used in SIIS (Subsea Instrumentation Interface Standardisation) applications, it concludes by looking forward at planned future SIIS milestones.
