For automotive navigation head units applications, the use of software based feature set provides not just flexibility to quickly meet moving target specifications, but also allows the reuse of hardware CPU resources, so aligning the hardware towards the average, not peak, loading. Proper design and a good understanding of the hardware architecture is the key for optimal software development which meets automotive quality requirements. However software now encapsulates most of the critical system value and a software reuse strategy, allowing rapid deployment on the next platform, is a powerful tool in low cost development. Entry level navigation systems with 2D map rendering, is fully realizable without the use of an additional expensive graphics processor, so breaking the cost barriers seen in alternative implementations. The current trend on navigation systems goes into full map 2 dimensional QVGA displays, setting increased processing requirements on the system. For this purpose the display and enhanced drawing approaches are elaborated. Finally we conclude how dynamic rerouting is possible, using the FM band Traffic Message Channel (TMC) function, with a minimum of system power consumption, thus enabling TMC message collection even while the car is not running.
