Bluetooth technology is reaching out from the cellphone platform to integrate all other personal electronic devices (consumer audio, portable computers, etc.) in a single wireless local network. Simultaneously, automotive platforms are accumulating more potential sources and clients for audio and data in the form of displays, sensors, speakers, and CD and tape drives. The benefits of connecting automotive electronics to the local Bluetooth network are becoming increasingly obvious, and soon it will become a standard feature expected by consumers making automotive buying decisions. However, the auto industry has special demands for reliability and compatibility that exceed normal home and office standards. The introduction of new wireless technologies creates new possibilities for complex systems to interact, which raises the importance of testing standards for insuring non-interference. Microcontrollers that have already been qualified in automotive applications are now available with integrated Bluetooth hardware and radio, which provides a low-risk, fast path for developing products that meet auto industry standards. This paper summarizes the regulatory requirements relevant to automotive applications for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Bluetooth Qualification Board (BQB), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and European organizations as they relate to the hardware and software features of microcontroller applications in the automotive industry. Features that affect the selection of the appropriate microcontroller are emphasized, to assist the designer in avoiding the heavy development cost and time-to-market impact of correcting a wrong choice late in the product development cycle. Finally, a compliance testing summary is provided for avoiding redundancy in meeting the overlapping requirements for automotive applications, FCC, and BQB, rather than producing unique test data for each body.
