Tyre/rood noise is a dominant part of the vehicle noise. It is annoying and it is important to reduce it. A disadvantageous geometry of the tread pattern of a tyre leads to unpleasant tonal components in the tyre/rood noise, called pattern noise. It is desirable to reduce these tonal components. In order to find an objective measure for the perceived pattern noise strength, listening tests are carried out. Objective parameters calculated from the order spectra of the noises are found to measure the subjectively perceived pattern noise strength. A model based on the human hearing, the calculation of contours, is applied to tyre/road noises. The contours are perceivable tonal components in the signals. By means of the calculation of contours the prediction of the perceived pattern noise strength is much increased. Existing methods for measuring tonal components are a much worse measure of the pattern noise strength. This prediction of the perceived pattern noise strength is a helpful tool in developing tyres producing less pattern noise and therefore helping to reduce the annoyance by tyre/rood noise.
