Severe slugging is a highly undesirable flow behaviour that has to be avoided. Many active and passive means of mitigation have been reported in the last couple of decades. This paper reports the results of laboratory investigations on the effects of a novel pipe section prior to the 10.5 m high catenary shape riser. It was found that with the novel pipe section in place, stratified flow was avoided at the base of the riser and there was a constant escape of air up the riser. As a result, severe slugging occurred at much lower gas and liquid superficial velocity. The severity of severe slugging was also much reduced.
