Many vehicle-related industries have considered optical systems: laser, infrared, and optical sensors for pedestrian recognition. However, the urban scene is usually very complicated. Pedestrians may change their body position suddenly and in an unpredictable way. Additionally, the urban background varies and changes unexpectedly, as it consists of buildings, trees and various different moving objects. All these parameters reduce the effectiveness of optical sensors. Another serious drawback of optical systems is their vulnerability to environmental conditions. Bad weather conditions (snow, mist, hail, and rain), darkness or even the reflection of the sun, can often affect optical systems. The driver's vision, which is also an optical system, is similarly influenced. The Ultra Wideband (UWB) radar, which has been applied in many cases for target recognition, should not be ignored in considering pedestrian recognition and classification. The deployment of UWB radar is an alternative or complementary technological solution to optical sensors. This paper presents the concept of pedestrian recognition via low frequency ultra wideband (UWB) radar. The approach is associated with obtaining the backscattered signal of the pedestrian for various cases of incident wave polarisation using antennas with rotational polarisation. The aim of the research is to study and analyse specific issues related to the change of the considered wave polarisation and specifically the human late time response.
