Location-dependent information with respect to inter-vehicle communications will include sensor data from other cars such as data on braking events sent from a preceding car, data on the traffic flow on a specific route, and information on sites located along the route. Although the need for information on the environment close to the vehicle is evident, so far no inter-vehicle communication system for data exchange between vehicles and between vehicles and roadside has been put into operation. To promote development of such an inter-vehicle communication system, the project 'FleetNet - Internet on the Road' was set up by a consortium of six companies: DaimlerChrysler AG, FHI FOKUS, NEC Europe Ltd., Robert Bosch GmbH, Siemens AG, and Temic Speech Dialog Systems GmbH. The universities of Braunschweig, Hamburg-Harburg, Hannover and Mannheim joined the project. The project was partly funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMB+F). FleetNet started on September 1, 2000 and ended on December 31,2006. The FleetNet project aimed at the specification of a communication system for inter-vehicle communications. As basic approach an ad hoc radio network which enables multihop communications was chosen. The applications which will be supported by such a system require new addressing schemes based on the positions of the vehicles in addition to conventional IP addressing. Furthermore, the extremely high network dynamics make the development of appropriate routing and forwarding strategies a key issue of the project. In this contribution, the application requirements are explained, the FleetNet reference model is introduced, and the basic algorithms for routing, forwarding and geographical addressing are discussed.
