In this paper an occupant safety system was described. The sensing part consists of two 24 GHz radars only. The sensors measure range, speed and azimuth angle in a simultaneous way. The tracked radar data are provided to a deployment algorithm, which controls the trigger for an electronical (reversible) seat-belt pretensioner as an example for an actuator. The complete system is installed on a Skoda Superb research vehicle. The experiments have shown that this system has very good capability to distinguish between unavoidable and avoidable crash scenarios even in high-dynamic multi-target situations. The system architecture is very simple. It consists of two sensors, a control unit and the pretensioner only. That means that it safes also construction space, cabling, computation complexity in the vehicle and last but not least costs.
