The Coastal Programs Section of the state of Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is involved in a benthic mapping project to identify and map the bottom and sub-bottom sediments of the Delaware Bay. The project integrates three types of acoustical systems that include RoxAnn seabed Classification, chirp sub-bottom profiling, and multibeam bathymetric mapping. The use of RoxAnn system, which is a 200-kilohertz single-beam remote acoustic sounder, helps in constructing regional bottom sediment maps by interpolating between adjacent track lines. An EdgeTech X-STAR chirp sonar system with a SB-216S tow fish is used top to study the depositions or erosion of sediment and to map potential and past offshore sand borrow sites that can be used for beach replenishment. A Reson AS 8124 multibeam bathymetric mapping system is also used for mapping selected high-interest areas of the bay.
