Automotive lead/acid batteries have traditionally been operated without active management or even monitoring. With growing demands for battery reliability and performance, battery management becomes a need. Recently, rapid progress has been made with Battery Management Systems (BMS) for 12 V automotive batteries. They are expected to penetrate the automotive volume market as commodities. Their hardware is characterized by low-cost sensors that form the basis for advanced battery state detection or monitoring. As a possible software interface for commodity BMS, the state-of-function (SOF) concept is discussed. An overview is given about the status of monitoring algorithms for lead/acid batteries in automotive applications. Active battery management functions are described. A case study demonstrates the application of these concepts to a micro-hybrid vehicle. For conceivable applications of lead/acid batteries in Mild- and Medium Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), commonalities and differences with available 12 V/14 V BMS are discussed. The need for cost-optimized solutions in conjunction with any lead/acid battery is emphasized.
